I am not a runner. I repeat, I am not a runner. Actually, I rather despise both the idea and act of running. If you would have told me a few years ago I was going to complete three 5ks and one half marathon in a year I would have laughed at you and politely told you no way (while secretly thinking you were an a lunatic). I vividly remember the torturous days in middle school when I was forced against my will to complete the mile run. I always thought I was going to die, partially because I had yet to be diagnosed with asthma and partially because I had no interest in donning my gym clothes just to run circles around the building. This year however, I decided to physically challenge myself by signing up for the Nashville Rock' n' Roll Half Marathon. I started off jogging for just 30 seconds before needing to walk for a minute, alternating for about half an hour. Gradually, I was capable of running for longer amounts of time. On race day I did have to walk at times, but I finished the 13.1 miles and crossed the finish line in my goal time. If I could complete a half marathon anyone can. I was surprised how many people opted to walk the race in it's entirety. If you decide to try your luck at running pick a training schedule that slowly increases your pace and mileage, get some good running shoes & socks (they really do make a world of difference), and find a running buddy! When looking at races, ensure that you give yourself enough weeks of training to successfully and safely complete your race. Happy running!
She doesn't just get to strut her stuff in the water treadmill, Claire also gets laser treatments, massage, and other exercises to strengthen her and challenge her balance. And better yet Claire loves going to the "spa" as we affectionately refer to canine PT in our household. Licensed physical therapists can become certified in canine or equine physical therapy at a few institutions throughout the United States, like the University of Tennessee. These rehabilitation programs allow physical therapists to use their rehabilitation knowledge and training, just applied to a different clientele. Veterinarians can also become skilled in canine rehabilitation! Here's a wonderful video documenting some of the wonders of canine rehabilitation! |
