I am not a runner. I repeat, I am not a runner. Actually, I rather despise both the idea and act of running. If you would have told me a few years ago I was going to complete three 5ks and one half marathon in a year I would have laughed at you and politely told you no way (while secretly thinking you were an a lunatic). I vividly remember the torturous days in middle school when I was forced against my will to complete the mile run. I always thought I was going to die, partially because I had yet to be diagnosed with asthma and partially because I had no interest in donning my gym clothes just to run circles around the building. This year however, I decided to physically challenge myself by signing up for the Nashville Rock' n' Roll Half Marathon. I started off jogging for just 30 seconds before needing to walk for a minute, alternating for about half an hour. Gradually, I was capable of running for longer amounts of time. On race day I did have to walk at times, but I finished the 13.1 miles and crossed the finish line in my goal time. If I could complete a half marathon anyone can. I was surprised how many people opted to walk the race in it's entirety. If you decide to try your luck at running pick a training schedule that slowly increases your pace and mileage, get some good running shoes & socks (they really do make a world of difference), and find a running buddy! When looking at races, ensure that you give yourself enough weeks of training to successfully and safely complete your race. Happy running! Comments are closed.
